Red Or Blue?

Nov 02, 2024

By Shawn

Ahhh, the age old question. Red or blue? This is a debate that has raged for years and will continue to rage for generations to come – but, which are you? Which best aligns with your… taste buds? Let’s get into this…

Sooooo…

Red or blue?

The only red or blue I care about right now – is our next LIMITED flavor drop of OUTLIFT CLINICAL. It’s going to knock your socks off!

It’s either going to be red raspberry or blue raspberry – we haven’t decided yet because the flavors are so good – it’s been hard to decide on which we’re going to run with.

But I digress…

I’m really not here to talk about limited flavors – I’m here to talk about something we all hold near and dear to our hearts.

Gains!

With all the insanity going on right now – it’s really easy to get caught up in the hype of election season – but the fact remains, people like us still have a job to do.

That job is to become the best version of ourselves – and we’re not going to do that arguing online with people we barely know about issues that we have barely a surface grasp on.

Silence The BS

But you know what we can do?

Get in the f**king gym and get to work.

I’ve turned back the clock on my lifting…

And what I mean by that – is that I’m reverted back to the techniques I used when I was a young pup – namely, Heavy Duty.

Mike Mentzer was ahead of the curve when it came to both lifting and nutrition.

There’s a famous story about him walking into the Olympia dressing room eating a donut – because his theory was – a calorie is a calorie. Meaning that a calorie is a unit of energy – and if you stay within a limited number of those units, the source shouldn’t matter.

However, I’m not here to talk about his nutritional advice…

I wanted to talk to you about his Heavy Duty theory on lifting.

The theory for those that don’t know – is that you lift heavy weight – slowly, to failure. He recommends a 4 second extension and 4 second retraction. Meaning, if you’re doing bench press – the descent of the weight to your chest should take 4 seconds total, while the press itself should be done at that same speed.

That makes sense, right? You can understand how this works the muscle in a way that traditional volume lifting doesn’t, but that’s not the weirdest part.

The weird part is that Mentzer recommends only 5 sets total for a body part – with 3 of those sets being a warm up of ascending difficulty.

So, you do only TWO working sets per bodypart.

That may sound like you’re not doing enough – but let me tell you – when I did it back in the day, I was stronger than I’d ever been.

Getting Heavy Duty

Doing it now, I’ve noticed how much faster I’m getting stronger. Over the past month that I’ve gone back to Heavy Duty – all of my lifts have gone up. Significantly. Which is nuts, considering that my ENTIRE lifting session lasts about 20-30 mins total.

However, as crazy as all that is – my split is even crazier…

I only lift 2 days a week – with a 3 day training split. Meaning I only work a body part once every 9 to 13 days. That’s a HUGE gap. Yet, I’m getting bigger and stronger – faster than I was when I was lifting with a traditional 3 days, volume-based split.

So, I’m lifting less…

Resting more…

And getting stronger than ever before.

Red or Blue?

Sounds like a win/win, right?

Well, I have to tell you – it’s a little weird walking into the gym and only training for 20 to 30 minutes – 2 days a week. I just don’t feel like I’m doing enough work – but the results are speaking for themselves.

The good news is – it’s giving me more time for my recovery protocols. I’m dealing with a few injuries (shoulder and knee) and with the extra time I’m saving – I’ve been able to do more to rehab those injuries.

That’s a plus…

But, again, it’s taken some getting used to.

If you’ve never tried Heavy Duty – you may want to give it a try… especially if you’ve hit a plateau of some kind.

If anything, it’ll give you a mental break from all the back and forth happening in our regular lives, right?

That red or blue bullshit can wait.

Plus… would Mike Mentzer steer you wrong?

“Man’s proper stature is not one of mediocrity, failure, frustration, or defeat, but one of achievement, strength, and nobility. In short, man can and ought to be a hero.” – Mike Mentzer
