Thankful AF: Post-Thanksgiving Recovery Edition

Nov 30, 2024

By Shawn

After the Thanksgiving feast has settled and the gym calls your name – it’s not always easy to remember how much we’re thankful for the little things that keep us going. No matter how big or how small these things may be – these blessings deserve some love. Let’s get into this…

Ah, Thanksgiving…

The one day where calories don’t count (at least in our hearts) and plates get stacked higher than my max deadlift.

Luckily, if you read last week’s offering – you may have used some of my tricks to at least mitigate some of the caloric damage many of us inflict upon ourselves during this American traditional holiday. However, if you didn’t – I pray for your quick recovery to your normal eating habits.

If you’re anything like I used to be – the aftermath is real: food coma, regret over that third slice of pie and an overwhelming desire to hit the gym like it owes you more money than Pauly Walnuts took from Christopher on the Sopranos.

So, if that’s you – as you wobble back into reality and training schedule – maybe you can take a moment to reflect on what you’re truly thankful for.

I did – and spoiler alert – it’s not just stuffing and mashed potatoes 🤤🤤🤤.

Forgive me if I don’t get TOO personal – but as a lifter and purveyor of lifting motivation – here’s what I’m most thankful for…

Freedom, Lovely Freedom

First and foremost, I’m thankful for freedom.

The freedom to lift, the freedom to grow, the freedom to chase goals and happiness – something that many in our world don’t get.

Freedom lets me walk into a gym in my cutoff metal shirt, Crocs (with Jibitz, of course) and fanny pack unapologetically as I pump Kublai Khan TX in my ears – grunting and sweating my way through a training session. Do I wipe down the machine? Sometimes – but I have the freedom NOT to, don’t I?

That freedom lets me take ownership of my fitness journey – success or failure – as I work to become stronger, bigger.. BETTER than before. Without it – we wouldn’t have the chance to really push and see what we can truly become.

So yeah, while we often take it for granted, freedom is the ultimate pre-workout…

It powers everything and I get down on my knees every night and thank God for it.

Speaking of deities – the next thing I’m thankful for?

The Pump (A Gift From the Gym Gods)

You know that feeling when your muscles are swollen, your veins are popping and you’re basically walking out of the gym like Thor or Hercules? That’s the pump…

And it’s one of those gifts that keeps on giving.

Scientifically speaking – the blood flowing into your muscles is a kind of high because it’s delivering oxygen and nutrients throughout your body. Who doesn’t like looking in the mirror when they’ve got a massive pump – seeing how full your muscles look or how engorged your veins are?

All that is great – but let’s not overcomplicate it – the pump just makes you feel good

It’s a reminder that all those reps and sets are worth it. Sure, it may be temporary – but for those 30 glorious minutes – you feel invincible…

And for that, I’m beyond thankful.

Which brings me to the third thing I’m grateful for…

Creatine: The MVP of Supps

So, let’s talk about creatine – one of the unsung heroes of gains.

Look, I get it – It’s not flashy or fancy or even tasty – but it’s the most researched supplement in the game, and for good reason…

It’s f**king legit.

Creatine boosts your ATP production (science speak for energy) – helping you lift heavier, train harder and recover faster. It’s like training buddy in a bottle, really – as it’s one of the most beneficial supps you can take outside of protein and pre-workout.

Plus, it keeps your muscles looking fuller – which pairs nicely with that pump we just talked about, right?

But honestly, if you don’t know what creatine is or you’re not taking it… what are you even doing?

Thankful For The Little Things

So, as the post-Thanksgiving haze fades and we gear up to crush our next training session – it’s clear that even the little things aren’t so little after all.

Freedom, the pump, creatine – these things may not seem like big ticket items (well, freedom does) but they’re the unsung heroes of every lifter’s life.

So here’s to gratitude…

It’s easy to focus on the big picture – but when you take a second to appreciate the details – you realize just how much thankfulness fuels your progress.

This season, let’s celebrate those little things that make a big difference – because they’re what keep us strong, motivated, and thankful every single day.
