Nobody likes the time change. You lose your evening light, your body clock gets scrambled and suddenly you’re yawning through warm-up sets. Daylight saving time workouts take a different plan than the ones you ran all summer – so let’s get into this…
I know I’m not alone when I say: daylight savings time SUCKS!
The mornings are brighter (which isn’t so bad), but the night comes quicker (which isn’t so good)…
We gain an hour of sleep, sure, but then it takes months to shift our body clock back to a place where we don’t feel like we’re dragging.
And even though the politicians have been talking for DECADES to abolish the practice altogether…
Here we are – on the precipice of another time change.
That’s right, folks – on Sunday, November 1, 2026, at 2 am – clocks fall back one hour…
And most red-blooded Americans would rather stop switching our clocks altogether.
In fact, Gallup found that a whopping 54% are ready to end daylight saving time.
Until the country settles on ONE time – we’ve got nothing to do but deal with it – and a lot of time, our workouts suffer…
But they don’t have to.
Here’s how to make it through without giving back the gains you earned.
[The Short Answer – The fall time change hurts training mainly by disrupting sleep, and poor sleep cuts muscle growth. One study found a single night of lost sleep lowered muscle protein synthesis by 18%. To protect your gains, shift bedtime 15–20 minutes a day in the week before the change, get bright light early, cut caffeine 6+ hours before bed, and lift at a consistent time.]
The Time Change Isn’t Going Anywhere Yet
Like I said, Washington keeps talking about abolishing this stupid time change…
In July 2026, the House passed the Sunshine Protection Act 308 -117 to make daylight saving time permanent.
As of early October, the bill was stalled in the Senate, with no vote scheduled before November 1.
Not everyone wants the same fix.

Sleep doctors at the American Academy of Sleep Medicine back permanent standard time instead – saying it fits human circadian biology best.
Either way, your alarm clock doesn’t care either way…
You still have to train through it.
Why the Time Change Hits Your Gains: Sleep
“Fall back” sounds easy…
You get an extra hour, right?
In practice, your internal clock doesn’t reset just because your phone did…
You wake up an hour early by BODY time.
The sun sets before most people leave work and darker evenings push melatonin earlier – leaving a lot of lifters feeling flat by the time they hit the gym.
So, what do they do?

They slam a late pre-workout and wreck the next night’s sleep.
However, bad sleep wrecks more than just your energy…
Bad Sleep Is a MUSCLE Problem – Not Just a Mood Problem
Here’s the part most sleep articles skip: sleep is when you make the biggest gains – as your body begins rebuilding what you broke down in the gym.
The facts:
- A 2021 randomized crossover study in Physiological Reports put 13 healthy adults through one night of total sleep deprivation.
- Muscle protein synthesis dropped 18% the next day.
- Testosterone fell 24% and cortisol rose 21%, a shift the researchers called a catabolic hormonal environment.
- The AASM recommends at least 7 hours of sleep per night for adults. One rough night won’t erase your gains…
But two or three weeks of choppy sleep while you adjust can stall progress you’ve been busting your ass to make.
That being said, there are some steps we can take to ensure our move into fall is as smooth as a baby’s butt.
Your Daylight Saving Time Game Plan
You can’t stop the clocks…
But you CAN control how fast your body catches up.

Run this plan the week before and the week after November 1 – and you might save yourself some headaches.
- Start Shifting Before the Clocks Do
The AASM suggests moving bedtime 15 to 20 minutes later each night for a few nights before the change. Shift meals and your training time along with it. By Sunday – your body is already most of the way there. - Own Your Morning Light
Light is the strongest signal your body clock gets. Get outside within 30 minutes of waking – even if it’s cloudy. Keep evenings dim and cut the phone glow in the last hour before bed. - Set a Hard Caffeine Cutoff
This is where most lifters sabotage themselves. A pre-workout at 6 pm can still be in your system at midnight. Research found 400 mg of caffeine taken 6 hours before bed cut total sleep by more than an hour.
The rule: no stimulants within 6 hours of bedtime. Training late? Go stim-free that day. - Lock In a Consistent Training Time
Your body adapts to routine. Pick a training window you can hit every day, morning or evening and stick with it for two weeks. Consistency tells your body clock where the day starts and ends. - Autoregulate the First Week
Don’t chase PRs the week of the change. Keep your planned volume but cap effort around RPE 7-8. If the bar feels slow on your first working set, drop a set and come back stronger next week. - Feed the Recovery Window
When sleep is short, nutrition has to carry more weight. Hit your daily protein target – and consider a slow-digesting protein before bed. One study found 40 g of casein before sleep increased overnight muscle protein synthesis
