Social media will be the downfall of human civilization. Collectively, our attention spans have been reduced to that of a goldfish. Everything from our trends to our news cycles have become miniscule – and this lack of depth could be detrimental to your training. If you want to make gains – say “f**k trends” and stick with what works. Let’s get into this…
Have you seen the latest TikTok dance?
…
That question was a test. If you know what the latest TikTok dance trend is – stop reading this now – as you’ve become plugged into the Matrix and you no longer have the autonomy of a living human.
Trends often have ZERO substance – they’re all sizzle with VERY little steak.
All of a sudden – it seems everybody is doing something that you’re not and it leads to a that FOMO (Fear Of Missing Out) that forces you to try and fit in. So, you jump in and the next thing you know – the masses have moved onto the next trend and you continue to be a step behind.
That’s why I say, “F**k trends”.
Instead of doing what’s “popular” – how about you just do what works?
Don’t worry about what the masses are doing… worry about what works for YOU. As Bruce Lee once said, “A wise man can always be found alone. A weak man can always be found in a crowd”.
Don’t be a weak man (or WOman)…
Blaze your own path.
That’s why I’m going to highlight 3 trends in the fitness industry right now that could stop your gains dead in their tracks…
So, if progress is your goal – listen closely – because what you’re about to learn could change everything for you if you find yourself stuck on the trend merry-go-round.
Overly-Caffeinated, Overly-Stacked Pre Workouts
If you watch any of the social media platforms and lifting is one of your passions – then you’ve probably been targeted with an ad for a pre-workout that promises to be the “strongest” or “most powerful” pre-workout you’ve ever tried?
As it’s my job to pay attention to these things – I can tell you – there’s a bunch out there. Yes, I’ve seen some formulas that would absolutely set your hair on fire if you were to take a swig – but there’s an inherent problem with labeling your pre-workout “the strongest” or “most powerful”…
When it comes to pre-workout formulas, “stronger” doesn’t mean “better”.
What makes a pre-workout formula “powerful” – is how the ingredients work together to elevate your training experience. Nobody wants to be over-caffeinated to the point that they feel like they’re on the verge of having a heart attack – yet some formulas are stuffed full of enough stimulants that they’d send a rhino into a frenzy.
You want the ingredients in your pre-workout to work synergistically with each other – and that only happens with research. So, make sure you pre-workout isn’t just cool because it’s jam-packed with stimulants…
Make sure that company has done the research that ensures their pre-workout will make your workout better – not just send you into a caffeine overdose.
Working Out Like A Pro Bodybuilder
Now, let me preface this by saying that following in the footsteps of your heroes like Arnold Schwarzenegger, Jay Cutler or Chris Bumstead isn’t a bad thing – however, there are things that professional bodybuilders do that most lifters don’t need to do.
When you’re a professional – you need to hit all the angles of your muscles because you’re trying to build the most perfect body to present to the judges – so making sure your teres major or your infraspinatus is important…
But if you’re in you’re not planning to do a show and are just looking to get bigger – exercises that target these tiny muscles are most likely a waste of your time.
Whenever I see a young kid with almost ZERO muscularity doing one arm cross body pulldowns – all I can do is shake my head.
If you want to put on size – lift increasingly heavier weight using the basic exercises. You can get HUGE doing the following: bench press, shoulder press, bent over rows, pull ups, squats, deadlifts, dumbbell curls and tricep push downs. Those 8 exercises done correctly – can put all kinds of size on you…
Or at least more than one arm cross body pulldowns.
Filming Content
Now, this one is controversial – because there are so many people these days filming in the gym for their socials or youtube…
But odds are – most of them won’t get seen by the vast majority of the public. Filming in the gym just makes you look like you’re full of yourself.
UNLESS…
Filming content actually makes you money. If you’re filming because it’s your job – I can understand that. If it’s how you put food on your table – then more power to you. However, if all you’re doing is looking to get likes on the Gram – just stop.
Please.
And that goes DOUBLE for filming yourself flexing in the locker room mirror. If you’re filming yourself in the locker room flexing and I walk in – I’m not going to be able to hide my chuckle – especially if you weigh less than 175 pounds.
F**k Trends
You want to film yourself shirtless – do it at home.
Don’t let FOMO keep you from making gains. We’ll stand out – by not fitting in…
F**k trends. Let the masses do what’s “cool” – we’ll do what works and pass them all by.
