Locked In: Why Focus Matters

You can have the perfect program, the perfect split and the perfect supplement stack – and still leave gains on the table. Focus isn’t a mindset cliché. It’s a measurable, trainable skill that changes how your muscles actually react. Let’s get into this…

“Get your head in the game!”

If I had a nickel for every time I heard that during my time in team sports – I’d have a LOT of nickels.

Coaches know – focusing on the task at hand is the first step to victory.

And that rings just as true in the weight room as it does on the playing field.

If you don’t feel like you’re getting the most out of your lifting – it may be you’re using the wrong pre-workout…

Or you may just need to start making your focus a priority.

Now, most people don’t call your mindset in the gym “focus” – they call it the “mind-muscle connection” (MMC) – which is the deliberate act of directing your attention to the specific muscle doing the work, instead of just moving the weight from point A to point B.

And It’s Not Just “Broscience’

Before you start thinking, “Shawn, just because your old lifting body told you this – doesn’t make it true.”

And you’re right…

The actual science does.

A 2017 study on push-ups found that focusing attention on the pectoralis major or triceps brachii increased muscle activity in the targeted muscle – and that increase didn’t come at the expense of the other muscle – activity in the non-targeted muscle didn’t move much.

That’s telling, but that’s not the only study showing this…

More recent research backs this up outside of benching.

A 2026 study on machine-based shoulder presses found that focusing attention on specific muscles increased their activity without reducing activity in non-target muscles…

This reinforces the science that shows that selective activation through focus isn’t a benching thing – it shows up across different exercises.

Broscience my a$$!

Focus Doesn’t Just Change Activation… It Changes GROWTH

Activation is one thing – but actual muscle growth is the real test.

That’s where this 8-week study gets really interesting…

Researchers compared an “internal focus” group – concentrating on the working muscle – to an “external focus” group and found the internal focus group saw muscle thickness in their elbow flexors and quads increase nearly twice as much as the external focus group over the same eight-week training period

Isn’t that NUTS?

Same sets, reps and weight on the bar…

The only variable was where the lifter’s attention was pointed – and it put on nearly TWICE the size.

If that doesn’t convince you to get focused – NOTHING will.

So, don’t be like most lifters and ignore this…

If you’re not making that mind/muscle connection – then you’re short-changing your results. Period.

The research is consistent: attention is CRUCIAL to growth.

Believe it

Locked In: Why Focus Matters

That’s all well and good…

But how do you focus if you’ve never tried?

Relax, young padawan – let us show you the path:

  • Slow the eccentric: A controlled lowering phase forces your brain to stay engaged with the muscle instead of relying on momentum.
  • Pre-activate before the set: A few seconds of deliberately flexing the target muscle before you load the bar primes the neural pathway you’re about to use.
  • Cut the mirror-check: Watching your reflection breaks attention. Close your eyes on isolation work if you have to – feel the contraction instead of watching it.
  • Isolation exercises first – if hypertrophy is the goal: Focus effects are strongest on single-joint movements like curls and extensions – compound exercises make it hard to focus your attention to one muscle group.

Look, your nervous system is part of your training program whether you’re managing it deliberately or not.

The lifters getting the most out of every rep aren’t necessarily lifting heavier – they’re lifting with more PURPOSE.

So, if you want to start seeing MORE growth in the gym – start training your focus…

And see if you can’t replicate the studies and maybe double your gains.
