Do you train for violence? What is the driving force behind your gym journey? Ask most gym goers and they’ll tell you – the ability to inflict or deflect violence is what attracted them to training. Fueled by hate, anger and/or fear – the gym has become a sanctuary for those looking to be on the right side of violence. Let’s get into this…
Can you remember why you first stepped into the gym?
Do you remember what made you open that door and step into a then unknown world?
I remember my reason – football.
I was 14 and a freshman in high school. and always one of the bigger kids – but I noticed that there were people stronger than me on the gridiron – and being a defensive lineman, I knew I was going to need that extra power. So, after learning the basics from my coaches, I had my mom sign me up at the local gym in Lake Worth, Florida so I could lift whenever I wanted to.
My goal, if you can’t tell?
To have the ability to inflict more violence on the football field. To be stronger than the guys lined up across from me. I wanted to dominate – and I knew that more strength and power.
However, that wasn’t the ONLY reason…
The truth of the matter is – I was afraid.
I had ZERO confidence.
Train For Violence
I always had what I like to call “inside out” confidence…
Meaning, because I was always one of the biggest guys in the room – I always felt that like that gave me a measure of safety. However, in the back of mind I always knew – that the key to having true confidence, which is confidence that comes from the inside out – was the real goal.
I was hiding behind a facade – and I knew it.
I knew that I was PETRIFIED knowing that if I was forced to put my abilities on display – that I’d be exposed, because being big is one thing…
Being strong is another.
And I knew that if I was going to build any REAL confidence – that I needed to get stronger.
So, for me, inflicting and deflecting violence was why I started lifting…
And here I am still lifting – 37 years later.
Even more?
Having the ability to inflict or deflect violence is more important than ever.
A Violent Society
Now, more than ever, it’s important to train for violence.
You can’t turn on the news or open your phone these days without seeing a story about some poor fella that got jumped or carjacked or suckerpunched somewhere.
I’m not sure what happened to our world – but it’s clear that things are more violent than ever – regardless of what the FBI stats say. I’ve seen these things happen with my own two eyes. I’ve had to break up fights over the DUMBEST reasons you’ve ever heard – because we’ve somehow reverted back to our Wild West roots.
I blame social media…
That being said, I believe that violence can be visited upon anybody – at any given time and for any given reason – which is why I believe we should always be prepared.
You have to know what you’re capable of if the chips are down – and having the strength that will help you in a dire situation or at the very least, make you a hard target – is something we should all be shooting for…
Because you never know when that time may come.
In fact, one of these scenarios happened to one of my best friends last year.
Random Acts of Violence
So, my buddy took his family to Boston last year for a little vacation – a long weekend in Beat Town – culminating with a little show at the famous Hatch Shell down on Charles River. While there, shots were fired and there was a literal stampede of people trying to escape.
So, here he is with his wife and two young daughters – in an unfamiliar city in a violent situation. At one point, he got separated from one of his girls – and had to make his way against the sea of humanity to get back to her.
Luckily, he had the strength to do that. He also had the strength to carry his pre-teen daughter in his arms as he made it back to his wife so they could find shelter until the danger passed.
It makes you think…
Would he have been able to do that if lifting wasn’t a priority in his life? Maybe. Maybe the adrenaline would have kicked in and he would have been fine. Exhausted, but fine.
But then again – maybe not.
Muscle is like a gun in that respect – it’s better to have it and not need it… than need it and not have it.
Train For Violence
We live in a world where being strong is more important than it has been in 2 to 3 generations…
You should train for whatever reason you want – love, aesthetics, whatever – but, do yourself a favor and keep in mind – that at some point, you should think about how what you’re doing could help protect yourself or your loved ones.
Let that thought help you get an extra rep…
Or let it help you push yourself to move up in weight.
Because you never know when you’re going to need that extra power or strength to help you survive.
“People sleep peaceably in their beds at night only because rough men stand ready to do violence on their behalf.” – Richard Grenier
