There’s a funny thing about giving – you often get back what you hand out. You wouldn’t think that this philosophy has any application to the gym. But you’d be wrong. Giving works as much for growth in the gym as it does for life. Let’s get into this…
Coming off the heels of Christmas, I wanted to talk about the spirit of the season: giving.
Giving is an important aspect of growth – and that goes as much inside the gym as outside of it.
Think about it, walk into any serious gym and you’ll notice something right away…
The strongest people in the room aren’t just lifting weight – they’re giving.
Giving advice when someone’s stuck…
Giving encouragement when someone’s failing a rep…
Giving time, knowledge and respect to people who are still figuring it out.
That’s not an accident…
It’s how growth actually works.
Want To Grow? Then GIVE.
In fitness – as in life – nothing is built alone.
Yes, the work is individual…
You move the weight…
You show up…
You suffer through the reps – alone. But progress accelerates when knowledge and effort are shared.

The lifter who spots you on a heavy set.
The coach who corrects your form.
The training partner who pushes you when you want to quit.
None of that is transactional – it’s contribution.
And the funny thing? The people who give the most usually grow the fastest.
Giving Sharpens Mastery
There’s a reason experienced lifters love teaching beginners.
Explaining technique forces clarity.
Coaching others reinforces discipline.
Helping someone else exposes your own gaps.
When you give knowledge away – you don’t lose it – you refine it.
In the gym, the lifter who hoards information stagnates. The one who shares it evolves.

That principle doesn’t stop at training – it goes far beyond the wall of your iron sanctuary…
But I’m not telling you anything you don’t already know.
Strength Grows When Ego Shrinks
Giving requires humility.
It means admitting you didn’t figure everything out alone…
Or remembering where you started…
And it definitely means pulling someone up instead of pushing them down in order to feel bigger.
Fitness culture at its best understands this: Real strength isn’t loud – it’s steady. Even more, it’s generous.
The strongest people in the room don’t need to dominate every conversation. They let their actions speak – and they help others do the same.
That mindset not only builds better athletes…
It builds better people.
Giving Creates Accountability
When you give – you’re no longer just responsible for yourself.
If you encourage someone else to show up – you’d better have the commitment to show up too.
Is discipline your lesson? Then you had better live it.

If you represent something bigger than yourself – you can’t cut corners.
This is why giving fuels long-term growth. It raises your standards.
You stop asking, “What do I feel like doing today?”
And start asking, “Who am I responsible to?”
That shift from the inner to the outer – changes everything.
The Iron Doesn’t Care – But People Do
Weights don’t care if you’re tired and progress doesn’t care about excuses…
But people matter.
And fitness culture thrives when the strong give to the growing…
When experience is shared…
And when success isn’t hoarded.
Giving doesn’t weaken you – it makes you stronger.
Because the truth is simple: you don’t rise by standing alone…
You rise by helping others rise with you.
“We make a living by what we get, but we make a life by what we give.” – Winston Churchill
