Why They’re Called “Fundamentals”

There’s a reason they’re not called “the basics.” Basics implies something you graduate from. Something you leave behind once you know what you’re doing. A starting point – nothing more. But fundamentals are different. You should NEVER abandon them. Let’s get into this…

Fundamentals shouldn’t be a touchy subject – but for some reason they can be.

Most people believe that once you’ve gotten the fundamentals of a skill down – be it lifting, swimming or anything in between – that they’re good.

“Well, I got those down. Now, it’s time to move on to the good stuff.”

Wrong.

Fundamentals are the thing you come back to.

The foundation everything else is built on…

The reason the advanced stuff works at all.

You don’t graduate from fundamentals – you master them…

And then you master them again.

Again this is for EVERYTHING.

That’s true in business. In relationships. In any craft worth taking seriously…

But nowhere is it more obvious – or more humbling – than in the gym.

Why They’re Called “Fundamentals”

Walk into any gym and you can spot the guy who skipped the fundamentals from across the room.

Knees caving on a squat…

Elbows flaring on a bench press.

Rounding his back on a deadlift because he loaded the bar for a nice ego lift.

He’s not weak. He’s unsteady. There’s a difference.

The strongest athletes in any room – the ones who have been at it for years and still look like they mean it – all have one thing in common: They never stopped caring about the fundamentals.

If anything, they care more.

Because they understand something that took most of them years to learn: the fundamentals don’t get easier.

You just get better at them – and that’s the whole point.

There’s no shortcut past a proper squat pattern.

No hack that replaces progressive overload.

No supplement stack in the world that makes up for chronically poor sleep, chronic dehydration and skipping your vegetables.

The advanced stuff is real. It works. But it only works when the foundation underneath it is solid.

Think of it like a building…

You can pour the most impressive architecture in the world – glass, steel, ten stories of ambition – but if the foundation has cracks in it, the whole thing is on borrowed time.

The gym is no different.

Every PR you chase, every physique goal you’re after, every performance benchmark you want to hit – all of it is sitting on top of your fundamentals.

Crack the foundation and everything above it is fragile.

Why Fundamentals Work – And Why People Skip Them

Here’s the honest answer to why people skip fundamentals: they’re not exciting.

Nobody posts a video of their perfect hip hinge.

Nobody goes viral for drinking enough water and getting eight hours of sleep.

The algorithm doesn’t reward the guy who’s been drilling the same movement pattern for three years because he knows it’s not perfect yet.

But the results do.

Compound movements build the base that isolation work sits on.

Sleep and hydration make the training mean something.

Progressive overload – adding just a little more than last time – is still the most reliable muscle-building principle ever discovered.

None of this is new.

None of it is complicated.

And none of it stops working just because something newer showed up.

The people chasing shortcuts are always looking for what’s next.

The people who master fundamentals are building something that compounds…

And compounding – whether it’s interest, muscle or skill – is the most powerful force in any long game.

The Best Don’t Skip This

Did you know Michael Jordan shot free throws before every practice?

Not because he needed the reps…

But because the free throw is fundamental – and the best in the world treat fundamentals like they’re still learning them.

That’s not humility for the cameras… that’s the system.

Every elite athlete, every top-performing business, every person who has built something worth having – they all share the same relationship with their fundamentals.

They protect them, revisit them and refuse to let the foundation erode just because they’ve been doing this long enough to know better.

Build the base. Master the movement. Trust the process that’s already been proven to work.

Add complexity only when the foundation can hold the weight.

Everything else – the advanced programming, the specialized techniques, the cutting-edge supplementation – those are multipliers.

And multipliers only work when there’s something solid to multiply.

Get the fundamentals right.

Then get them righter.

That’s not where you start.

That’s where you should live.
