Fit To Survive?

Aug 10, 2024

Our world is trying to make us softer by making our lives easier. Hard work and physicality are no longer valued – unless you’re talking about professional athletes – not average people. Most people you know would not make it two months if the power went out – as most people are unequipped, unskilled and unfit to survive. Let’s get into this…

Honest question: If the apocalypse happened tomorrow – what do you think your chances of survival would be?

If you’re reading this – odds are – you’d last longer than most, because if you are reading this, you most likely lift. And if you lift, you’ll be better suited than most. We’ve become a nation of couch potatoes and gamers.

Did you know only 28% of Americans go to the gym on a regular basis? Now, the study showed that 52% of Americans “exercise at home” – but, come on… most of those people probably consider walking their dog around the block “exercise”. We all know – short of those who build AMAZING home gyms – you’re not going to get a quality workout at home.

So, if that study is right, it means that 173,849,017 people (subtracting the 75 million kids under 14) in the US – don’t engage in resistance training…

That’s pathetic.

Especially seeing that physical fitness is one of the most overlooked survival skills in an apocalyptic event. But…

Fitness isn’t enough. Yes, while being strong will help you immensely, it should also be noted that raw physical fitness alone isn’t enough to ensure your survival in a post apocalyptic world.

As fast and strong as you are – if you can’t do things like find food, build a shelter, make a fire, perform basic first aid, etc. – you’re not going to last very long.

I was listening to an expert recently – and he said that if the power grid went – that 90% of Americans would be dead within 9 months. That statistic was both shocking and horrifying – and it got me thinking…

How many Americans just don’t have what it takes to endure a life without the comforts modern society has become accustomed to?

Apparently, a lot. If that expert is right – that means that the population of the US would dwindle down to 34.5 million in less than a year. That is just unbelievable. And that brings us back to my original question…

Do you think you’d be one of those 34.5 million left standing?

Of course, you do…

So do I. However, there are factors that play into your chances of survival. As we said, being physically fit is one of them, knowing how to fight is another. Another skill? Knowing how to shoot. People like to think that people work together when the chips are down – but history proves the exact opposite.

When society breaks down – it’s a dog eat dog world…

And if you don’t have the capacity for violence – odds are somebody is going to steal your proverbial lunch money… or worse.

This is why I think strength will go a long way.

Yes, strength isn’t skill – but you don’t need a lot of skill to swing a baseball bat or toss a fool. You don’t need skill to be able to walk up a hill. You need cardio and strong legs – especially if you’re going to be carrying a backpack full of supplies.

However, even more than strength and skill…

You should have a plan.

You should know exactly what you’re going to do, where you’re going and what you’re going to do when you get there.

I’m not saying you need to prepare a bug out bag – but it wouldn’t hurt.

Me? I know exactly what I’m doing, where I’m going and what I’m going to do when I get there.

I’m going to give you the biggest tip, though – and it’s about transportation.

When people think about an apocalypse – they don’t think about the fact that our roads will be impassable by vehicle. And, even if you have a video – where are you going to find fuel? The shelf life of most gasoline is only 3 to 9 months – so you have to keep that in mind.

Which is why my favorite mode of post-apocalyptic transportation is bicycles.

Hand pump for tires, physical effort for motion – you can even get a car to pull behind it. Yeah, bicycles are one of the most overlooked resources of an apocalypse.

That being said…

Keep lifting. Keep doing the stairmaster. Keep riding the bike. Keep being one of the 28% of adult Americans who are trying their best to improve their fitness.

Last thing you want to be is the slowest man in a race with zombies…

I mean, I don’t have to be the fastest man – I just gotta be faster than YOU.
