Gym Horror Stories

Every gym has its ghosts. Not the kind that rattle chains. The kind that hog benches, block mirrors and leave puddles behind. Since it is the spooky season – we figured it would be a good time to gather round the campfire and talk about them. Let’s get into this..

We all have our gym horror stories…

One of my favorites?

Coming back to the locker room after training hard. I’m exhausted. I go to sit down on the bench – just for a minute to catch my breath and gather my thoughts.

But right before I’m about to plop down, I see…

A huge wet half circle of sweat from somebody who escaped the sauna and decided that instead of a shower – they’d drip dry on the communal bench.

Believe me, you only make the mistake of sitting down before looking ONCE.

But that’s just ONE gym horror story – there are many others…

So dim the lights, chalk up and pull your hoodie tight.

This Halloween, we’re telling the three stories every lifter talks about in the locker room.

[The Short Answer – The scariest thing in your gym isn’t the weight on the bar. It’s the people who forgot the unwritten rules. Here are three horrors you’ve already survived, and how to keep training through them.]

“My Machine Was Taken”

It’s 5:47pm. You’ve been thinking about this all day.

Chest day. Flat bench.

You walk in, headphones on, pre-workout kicking in.

And then you see it.

Someone is on your bench.

Not just any bench. YOUR bench. The bench you ALWAYS use because it feels like home.

And somebody is sitting on it…

Not training. Sitting. Scrolling.

Resting between sets that ended sometime last fiscal year.

Your heart rate climbs. You circle like a shark. You knock out a set of curls you never planned – just to stay close.

But then, you lock eyes in the mirror.

Nothing.

Ten minutes. Fifteen. Your pump is fading. The clock is ticking. Your pre-workout is turning on you.

That’s the real horror. Not the wait.

The spiral.

How to survive it: Ask how many sets they have left. Offer to work in.

And always walk in with a Plan B: dumbbell press, a different bench, a different order.

The lifter who adapts never loses his mind.

“The Influencer”

It started with a tripod.

One tripod, planted in the middle of the free-weight floor.

Then a ring light.

Then a second phone “for B-roll.”

Now you’re doing rows in the background of someone’s “day in my life” – and you never signed a release.

You can’t walk past the mirror. You can’t touch the cable station – because it’s “the set.”

And you definitely can’t drop your dumbbells without ruining take 14.

And the worst part? They did one set. Filmed it six times.

Look, we’re a supplement brand…

We LOVE content.

But the gym floor is not a studio.

How to survive it: Don’t stand in their shot to make a point. If the tripod is blocking a walkway or a station – ask them to move it.

Most gyms have rules about filming other members – so use them.

Then put your head down and outwork the people performing.

“Sweat Soaked Creatures”

You hear it before you see it…

Heavy breathing. The squelch of a shirt that gave up the ghost about an hour ago.

The Sweat Soaked Creature finishes its set on the incline bench. It rises. It walks away.

Left behind: a full-body silhouette. A human-shaped puddle. Still warm.

The towel station is ten feet away.

The spray bottle is sitting right on the rack.

It walked past both.

You approach slowly. You weigh your options. You briefly consider a new gym.

How to survive it: Bring your own towel. Wipe down before AND after. Or, ask the person that used it if they’re still using the machine – as they didn’t wipe it down.

It’s a more polite way of reminding them that their sweat isn’t the gift they think it is.

And if you’re the one leaving a body outline on the bench, this is your sign.

Sweat is earned. Leaving it for the next person isn’t.

The End… Or Is It?

Every lifter has lived all three.

The bench gets taken. The tripod goes up. The creature walks away from the puddle.

The ones who are brave enough to keep showing up anyway are the ones who change.

So adapt…

These are all avoidable situations.

We don’t have to lose our cool or snitch on the offender.

9 times out of 10, a polite conversation is enough to kickstart their common sense and get them acting like the gym isn’t their own personal space.

It’s a shared space – and that’s something we should all keep in mind when we check in at the front desk.

Because the last thing we want is to let our emotions turn us into the biggest monster there is – The Gym Karen.

“The oldest and strongest emotion of mankind is fear, and the oldest and strongest kind of fear is fear of the unknown.” – H.P. Lovecraft
