Thank God For Your Enemies

Most people try to navigate this world without ruffling feathers. They tread carefully so as to not make any waves. Why? Why are so many people so concerned with what others they don’t even know think about them? If you lived your life right – you’re going to have a few enemies… and you should be thankful for that. Let’s get into this…

What a weird concept?

Being thankful for your enemies?

Sounds like some kind of weird reverse psychology to help abrasive people come to grips with the fact that they’re not well liked. It’s not, though. Your quality of enemies lets you know just how well of a life you’re living.

However, even knowing that – most people would rather live peaceful, uneventful and non-confrontational lives.

I get that. I myself would love to live a life without confrontation. Not that I’m scared of confrontation – quite the opposite, really – I get a twisted rush when there seems to be an issue rising between two people…

Even (or especially) if I’m one of them.

No, I simply don’t like the hassle. Everything about my appearance screams, “leave me alone.” I simply don’t want to deal with people. I like to do what I need to do in relative peace and then leave so I can get home and hibernate in my cave. I’m the walking epitome of “walk softly, but carry a big stick.” Much like the Incredible Hulk – I just want to be left alone.

However, life isn’t that easy…

Jealousy, anger, fear – often cause people to lash out. Even when you’re the cause – there’s something about you that may remind you of the person they’re jealous of or angry at – which is a weird aspect of the human psyche.

That being said, sometimes… there are just people you simply do not like.

I’m here to tell you – that’s ok.

You don’t have to like everybody – and everybody does not have to like you. In fact, as I said earlier, you can tell the quality of life somebody has lived by their enemies.

Whether you’re a good person or a scumbag – it makes no difference…

Because as Paul Newman once said, “A man with no enemies is a man with no character.”

If you stand up for what you believe – again, be it good or bad – you’re going to rub people the wrong way. There are as many opinions as there are people – and odds are – a good portion of the population is not going to agree with your point of view.

What you don’t want to be is a wishy-washy…

A “Yes” man…

Or a coward.

A coward will backtrack from their words if they’re not backed by conviction. If they’re afraid of confrontation. This is especially true of people who have never been punched in the face. People who don’t know what to expect from a shot to the mush will often be the first people to waver from their “beliefs”.

That’s not me.

I’ve been punched in the face plenty. There’s no amount of physical violence you can threaten me with that will get me to waver in my convictions. There are some things you’ve got to be willing to die for – but I can tell you – political ideologies are one of those things.

I would gladly die for love, God or freedom.

Morior invictus.

However, there’s not a politician born that I’d be willing to put my life on the line for. Well, maybe Teddy Roosevelt – that guy was the epitome of American badassery..

But all the other ones?  They can go kick rocks.

All that being said… you’ve got to stand for something.

You’ve got to have ideas that you’re willing to step into the arena to defend.

What is that old saying? You’ve got to stand for something or you’ll fall for anything? That’s not just a saying. People without true convictions are easily manipulated. You’ve got to have a solid stance as to be unwavering.

And that may be ok for you…

For me and others like me? We’ll be the unmoving oak.

“Doesn’t matter what the press says. Doesn’t matter what the politicians or the mobs say. Doesn’t matter if the whole country decides that something wrong is something right. This nation was founded on one principle above all else: the requirement that we stand up for what we believe, no matter the odds or the consequences. When the mob and the press and the whole world tell you to move, your job is to plant yourself like a tree beside the river of truth, and tell the whole world — ‘No, you move.’” – Captain America
